Animal studies have indicated that exposure to PCBs and BPA can disrupt the composition of gut bacteria, leading to gut dysbiosis and associated health problems. Additionally, industrial chemicals can modulate the expression of genes involved in gut barrier function, inflammation, and metabolism.</p><p>The exact mechanisms underlying the effects of environmental pollutants on the gut microbiome are still being studied. Direct interaction, where pollutants directly affect the growth and survival of specific bacterial species in the gut, is one possible mechanism. Indirect effects are also observed, where pollutants disrupt host-microbe interactions, alter immune responses, and influence gut barrier function. For instance, certain industrial chemicals can interfere with the expression of genes involved in gut barrier integrity and immune modulation, thereby affecting the gut microbiome.</p><p>To mitigate exposure to environmental pollutants, individuals can take proactive measures. These include avoiding heavily polluted areas, using air purifiers, consuming clean and filtered water, selecting organic and locally sourced foods, and being mindful of potential sources of contamination. And where there&#8217;s buzz, there also tends to be a lot of confusion, so here&#8217;s a quick low-down on the timely topic, plus a great recipe featuring top-shelf anti-inflammatory ingredients.</p><p><strong>What is inflammation and why is it bad?</strong></p><p>You might be surprised to learn that not all inflammation is bad. When you cut your finger or sprain your ankle, for example, the swelling and redness that results is inflammation-- and that is a healthy immune response. This type of helpful inflammation, which comes and then dissipates pretty quickly, is called acute inflammation.</p><p>Chronic inflammation is the type of inflammation that can cause problems in the body. It's a continuous, low-level immune response that doesn't subside and can often get worse over time. Chronic inflammation is thought to be at the root of many health problems such as arthritis, digestive problem, heart disease, cancer and more.</p><p><strong>How to manage inflammation</strong></p><p>Here&#8217;s the good news: much of what causes chronic inflammation are things we have control over. Lifestyle factors such as poor diet, stress, not getting enough sleep and not getting enough physical activity are major inflammation triggers, so focusing on our well-being in a holistic way can make a big difference.</p><p>In our always-busy culture it can be challenging to eat well, manage stress, get enough sleep, and move our bodies regularly, but remember, you don&#8217;t have to do any of this perfectly all the time. Making small changes, consistently, in the right direction, can help reduce inflammation and have a big impact on our health and well-being over time.</p><p><strong>Which foods are anti-inflammatory?</strong></p><p>One easy step you can take is to incorporate more anti-inflammatory foods into your life. If you have been following me and are enjoying my recipes, you are probably already on the right track because the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods ---colorful produce, whole grains, nuts and seeds, fatty fish such as salmon, and spices such as cumin, turmeric and ginger, have long been cornerstones of the meals I create.</p><p>These foods are not only anti-inflammatory, they are healthful for a multitude of reasons since they are loaded with antioxidants and other protective compounds. On top of that, they are downright delicious. On the flip-side, foods that contribute to inflammation, such as refined grains, sugars, processed meats, and trans-fats, are ideally kept to a minimum for a host of other reasons as well.</p><p>Ultimately, the way of eating that keeps inflammation in check is nothing radically different ---it&#8217;s essentially the same food pattern that is healthful in general. Don&#8217;t you just love it when things come together like that?</p><p><strong>The Top 3 Anti-inflammatory Foods</strong></p><p>My friend and colleague Carolyn Williams, PhD, RD, author of <em>Meals the Heal: 100+ Anti-Inflammatory Recipes in 30 Minutes or Less</em> was on my podcast to share her wisdom on this topic. [<a href="https://www.elliekrieger.com/podcast/episode-35-carolyn-williams/">Listen here</a>]</p><p>Her bottom line advice for folks who want to start eating more anti-inflammatory foods really stuck with me. She says to focus on adding a daily serving of each of the top 3 anti-inflammatory foods:</p><p>-leafy greens</p><p>-berries</p><p>-cruciferous vegetables</p><p>This can be as easy as putting some lettuce or spinach on a sandwich, snacking on strawberries, and roasting some broccoli, cauliflower, or Brussels sprouts with dinner. Dysbiosis, a state of imbalance in the gut microbiota, has been linked to a range of mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression. Indeed, <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27509521/">a 2019 systematic review </a>and meta-analysis found that people with anxiety and depression were more likely to have gut dysbiosis. To get even more specific - individuals with depression <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/nmo.12378">have been found</a> to have lower levels of certain beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, and higher levels of harmful bacteria, such as Clostridium.</p><p>The gut microbiota can also produce neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which is often referred to as the "feel-good" neurotransmitter. <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31383278/">A 2016 study </a>found that people with depression had lower levels of certain gut bacteria that are involved in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, which has been linked to the development of depression and anxiety.</p><p>In addition to alterations in gut microbiota composition and neurotransmitter production, poor gut health can also contribute to systemic inflammation, which has been linked to the development of mental health disorders. Chronic inflammation has been shown to have negative effects on brain function and can lead to the development of depression and anxiety.</p><p>Treating gut dysbiosis through probiotics, prebiotics, or dietary changes has been shown to lead to improvements in anxiety and depression symptoms. For instance, <a href="https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Probiotic-Bifidobacterium-longum-NCC3001-Reduces-A-Pinto-Sanchez-Hall/a13cedfac73e1143f2651113c45c47c89bf10c05">a 2017 study found</a> that a 4-week course of probiotics led to significant improvements in both anxiety and depression scores among people with irritable bowel syndrome.</p><p><strong>Question 2: Can gut health be improved through lifestyle changes like exercise and meditation, and if so, how might this benefit my mental health?</strong></p><p></p>

Let&#8217;s get stuck in&#8230; </p><h4><strong>Q: What is the Bristol Stool Scale and Should I be Checking my Poo? </strong></h4><p>The Bristol Stool Scale was developed in 1997 at the University of Bristol - it&#8217;s a diagnostic medical tool to classify stools into 7 categories. The chart is designed to help doctors measure the time it takes for food to pass through your body - intestinal transit time. It therefore serves as a useful point of reference to discuss your poo with a doctor in the event you don&#8217;t have a sample - it helps doctors to diagnose digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhoea and IBS or to evaluate the efficacy of treatments for bowel diseases. Everyone has different bowel habits, but the important thing is that your poo is soft &amp; easy to pass - like types 3 &amp; 4 on the chart.&nbsp;</p><p>Types 1-2 of the chart indicate constipation.&nbsp;</p><p>Types 3-4 are ideal as they are easier to pass&nbsp;</p><p>Types 5-7 may indicate diarrhoea or a condition requiring urgent attention&nbsp;</p><p>Other things to look out for are the colour of your poo, the pace &amp; the regularity of trips to the toilet.&nbsp;</p><p>When it comes to colour, earthy tones are best: medium to dark brown, resulting from iron-rich pigments released from broken down red blood cells &amp; bile. Occasionally, greenish poop may appear, but this is nothing to worry about unless it becomes persistent - this might mean food is moving through your body too quickly. Light yellow poo can indicate infection or inflammation, your bile duct may be blocked or your body may not be absorbing nutrients properly. Black or red poop can occur if you eat licorice, beetroot, a crazy coloured drink or if you take iron supplements. It can also indicate bleeding in your digestive tract caused by more serious issues (please visit a doctor should this occur).</p><p>The pace should be steady &amp; the time it takes for your food to make it into your poop is linked to the diversity of bacteria in your gut (the more diverse, the better &amp; the steadier the pace). Finally, consistency - poo habits vary from person to person, but as a rule of thumb, any major changes to your personal &#8216;normal&#8217; could indicate a more serious problem that should be investigated by a doctor.&nbsp;</p><p>So, to peek or not to peek at your poo? I&#8217;d definitely recommend keeping a regular eye on your poo to see what it tells you.
